Artificial grass is a great solution for those who want a green and healthy-looking lawn without the hassle of maintenance. However, even artificial grass needs some care to keep it in top condition. In this article, we will discuss the four steps and tips you should follow to maintain your artificial grass.

Why Maintain Artificial Grass?

Most people don't always consider the necessity of maintaining artificial grass. The common thought is that a synthetic product doesn't require upkeep. Furthermore, people often buy artificial grass specifically for its low maintenance needs.

Yet, regular maintenance of artificial grass is important. After all, it remains a product that wears down with use. Additionally, artificial grass is exposed to weather conditions, leading to natural processes. Think of the formation of algae, mosses, or the germination of natural seeds and grasses. If you let this run its course, nature will eventually take over again. Naturally, you want to prevent this as much as possible with artificial grass.

Therefore, artificial grass also benefits from some attention. As a rule, maintain artificial grass regularly for long-lasting enjoyment. An added benefit of good artificial grass maintenance is that the lawn always looks neat and well-cared for.

Cleaning Artificial Grass: How and How Often

Below are the steps for optimal artificial grass maintenance. The ideal "artificial grass cleaning checklist."

  1. Clear coarse debris and brush the artificial grass (do regularly)
  2. Spray away finer particles with a garden hose (regularly or when needed)
  3. Remove any weeds and mosses (only for overdue maintenance)
  4. Add infill sand (once a year)

1. Clear Coarse Debris – Regularly

Artificial grass is partly self-cleaning, but coarser particles don't disappear on their own. Think of leaves, twigs, pinecones, or other seeds. Sweep these together regularly. If they remain too long and come into contact with moisture (rain), removal will only become more difficult. Moreover, by doing this regularly, you ensure that seeds cannot germinate.

Tip from Europe Grass: Use a rake or a hard broom for this. This works best for sweeping together coarser parts. But, the advantage is that it acts as a kind of comb for the artificial grass. This helps the artificial grass stand upright beautifully again. Artificial grass can sometimes lie flat due to use.

Do you need faster artificial grass maintenance? Use a leaf vacuum or leaf blower. However, the effect is less than with a broom or rake. Deeply embedded particles often remain in place.

2. Clean Artificial Grass with a Garden Hose – Regularly or When Needed

Artificial grass, especially in the Netherlands, is often exposed to rain. This is good, as any finer dirt residues (spilled drinks, sand, possibly urine) are washed away. But in the Netherlands, it is also increasingly dry for longer periods. It is precisely then that it is good to spray water over the lawn regularly. This prevents unpleasant odors and immediately improves hygiene.

Are there pets that have urinated on the artificial grass? The garden hose is the solution. However, make sure it is rinsed away quickly. Optionally, it can be cleaned additionally with artificial grass cleaner later. In any case, do not let urine soak in. If this does happen, the odor may linger, in which case Anti-Odor is recommended.

3. Remove Any Weeds and Mosses – Check Regularly, Preferably Prevent

If artificial grass is not maintained frequently enough, there is a chance that weeds like moss will settle between the artificial grass. This is a sign to maintain the artificial grass a bit more often. Still, mosses and weeds are usually easy to remove by hand. Simply by pulling and plucking them away.

Once the coarse weeds are gone, remove all residues with a mixture of lukewarm water and vinegar. Rub it in, and the maintenance is done!

Tip from Europe Grass: Place a pressure-distributing geotextile under the artificial grass during installation. This prevents weeds from growing upwards from below.

4. Tip for Excellent Artificial Grass Maintenance: Add Infill Sand (Once a Year)

Even during the installation of artificial grass, sand is spread. This is done to slightly weigh down the artificial grass and especially to stabilize it. It prevents shifting and thus creases. Moreover, the granules ensure that the artificial grass remains nicely upright. However, by using artificial grass, the amount of infill sand present decreases.

It is therefore advisable to provide the lawn with extra sand once a year, as the ultimate form of artificial grass maintenance, if it proves necessary. Use special infill sand with a round granule for this. This ensures the most natural appearance.

Simply spread the sand over the grass mat and then brush it in with a broom. As a rule: 1m² of artificial grass = 10 kg of sand that should be present. Depending on the type of artificial grass and the length of the blades, the correct amount of sand can be determined. If in doubt, feel free to contact us.
